This is a method to strengthen the security of your Google Apps account. At this time it is an optional service enabled or disabled by each user. Use this link to access the instructions Google created for this service. Text messages will work to generate the code for 2-step verification, but use of the Google Authenticator app is recommended for those that chose this service. Once the service is activated, authentication through Google Authenticator becomes an option. Setting up Google Authenticator for an account on multiple devices is possible by scanning the QR code on each device to be utilized. Only enable Google Authenticator for your account on devices you own or are specifically assigned to you. As the process of setting up 2-step verification proceeds, "application specific" passwords are generated for your Trinity account. Create one password for each device (Mac, iPad, iPod, phone, etc.) and enter it in any application using your Trinity account on that device. This password never needs to be entered again, so there is no need to write it down or otherwise remember it. No problem exists with using a different password in different applications on a device, but a single password is more efficient to setup. Be sure to create and print the emergency codes and put them in a secure, but accessible location.
